PVYA Track and Field

Track & Field is one of the oldest programs offered by PVYA starting in 1982.  This sport is open to all boys and girls grades 1 thru 8.  Practices are held on various weekday nights from 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm at the high school track, usually 2 nights per week starting in mid March and ending in early June.

Track offers, sprints, distance, field events.

While competition is a focus of the program, the coaches use a sport learning approach and teach the skills needed for success at all levels.

Registration is done in person either on the set registration / meet the coach nights or at the first 3 offered practice nights.  The fee is under $30 per athlete with a family plan offered for more than 1 child.

HISTORY:

Track & Field was one of the original sports programs offered by PVYA along with basketball.  The program has been directed by Lee & Anne Zumbach since 1981. Many of the areas top track & field athletes got their start in the youth program.  The team is part of the Mid Maryland system of Track & Field and has taken part in a number of AAU events over the years.  This is a spring season sport.  Fall Cross Country is also offered.

OBJECTIVE:

This program is open to all area boys and girls ages 6 thru 14.  The program teaches the basics of the sport of Track & Filed with a concentration on learning, how to warm up, proper diet, training methods and skills.  A fun approach is used.

While competition is a part of the sport, the coaches feel that learning and personal improvement are the most important goals.

MEETS:

A series of local meets is provided.  These take place on various weekends at high school tracks in the area.  A schedule is passed out at practice.  Athletes are encouraged to take part in as many as possible.  A small entrance fee is charged at each meet.

CLOTHING / EQUIPMENT:

All equipment is provided by the program with the exception of personal track specific shoes that the athlete needs to purchase.  A visit to a shoe store that gives personal attention to the need is recommended.  All athletes will be issued a team t-shirt.  Athletes need to come to practice dressed properly for the weather conditions.

 VOLUNTEERS / COACHES:

The program will not work without parent volunteers!  Help is needed at practices and the meets.  The program is always in need of people with specific knowledge of the sport in particular the field events, high jump, long jump and shot put.
